My Personal Teaching Philosophy
I believe that all students deserve access to an education that is challenging, rewarding, and tailored to fit their individual learning needs.
I will use a variety of teaching strategies to present curriculum, and these will be evidence based. I will work hard to recognize the individual strengths of every student and tap into teaching techniques that will work for him or her. Students will be taught to work cooperatively with others and actively engage in the material being presented to them.
Classroom management is very important in being an effective teacher, and I will work hard to effectively manage my classes and to continue to grow in this area.
I will work hard to consistently be aware of all of my students’ responsiveness to my material and keep them engaged in the learning process using thoughtful techniques. If a student exhibits disruptive behavior, it will be dealt with immediately with the least amount of intervention necessary. There will be clear ground rules, expectations, and structure to my classes without excluding excitement and fun around learning. I will regularly evaluate my effectiveness in classroom management and adjust my practices as needed.
I will have a reciprocal relationship with my students, where we both have clear expectations of what we will receive from each other.
In the beginning of the school year, I will communicate what I expect from students and give them an opportunity to voice their expectations of what I will do for them. I require that my students follow the classroom rules; respect and cooperate with each other; have high expectations of themselves; and give me feedback if they believe I could do something better. I expect them to demand that I make necessary accommodations to allow that all students are engaging in curriculum; that I am available to answer questions and work with individual students who request help; that I provide adequate thoughtful feedback to work that is submitted to me; and that I promote a safe, tolerant learning environment.
I will be a multi-culturally sensitive teacher and promote a safe learning environment that embraces diversity.
I will work hard to be sensitive to the diverse needs of my students, and the outside factors that may be affecting their ability to succeed in the classroom. I will infuse the ideas of tolerance and acceptance of individual differences into my curriculum. Being a multicultural teacher means accepting and tailoring practices to accommodate students’ race, gender, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, language, values, beliefs, and learning styles. I will monitor my effectiveness in this area and strive to be as competent as possible.
I will continue to develop professionally throughout my career and collaborate/ consult with other experts to improve my teaching skills.
I will continuously evaluate my practices and work to improve areas that are not meeting my standards. I will keep up with professional literature relevant to me, attend conferences, and communicate with other professionals (school counselors, teachers, university faculty, administrators) to gain competence. I will adopt practices that have empirical support, and remove practices that are not effective.
I will work with parents/guardians and community members to gain a holistic picture of my students needs and ensure that I am responsive to those needs.
Communication with parents/guardians will not be limited to parent teacher conferences. Information will be shared with parents throughout the school year, and an open line of communication will be encouraged. Parents will be invited to be involved in the school. An environment that values this partnership will be fostered. Community resources will be pointed out to families and various community members will be utilized for classroom instruction.
